Buying a car is a huge investment, perhaps your most valuable if you are not yet a homeowner. If you have already perused the new car lots to get an idea of what’s out there, you have already learned that salesmen will tell you anything you want to hear so that you will buy their brand. The smart way to car shop is to research, research, research. There are many things you will want to take into consideration if you are buying a brand new car; it is not about looks alone.
Many new car buyers make the mistake of buying only what is attractive to them, but there are other more important factors to consider. Among them are:
Safety – Everyone wants to feel safe in their vehicle. Safety is perhaps one of the most important things to consider, especially if you will frequently have children in your vehicle, or will be traveling often. Consult new car buying guides, which will often detail how each vehicle fared on certain safety and collision tests. Choosing a vehicle with appropriate safety features is a must, such as side and passenger airbags, anti-lock brakes and sturdy bumpers.
Brand Record – It’s not hard to find out if the vehicle you are interested in is manufactured by a brand with a good history. Certain models or makers may have issues that you just don’t want to deal with. Find out if the vehicle you are interested in has a history of recalls, reported lemons, or frequent need for repairs after a short time off the car lot. You will save yourself a huge headache.
Foreign vs. Domestic – Not always a matter of where you are putting your dollars, it might be an important deciding factor in your car buying experience. The difference is that typically it is less expensive to have a domestic vehicle repaired. Parts are not shipped from overseas and technicians do not need to travel overseas for specific training. Some foreign vehicles may have a record of needing service or repairs less often, but when they do need to go in the shop, it could break the bank.
