Scooting Safety
Tips On Scooter Driving Safety
Last year over 40,000 people were admitted to emergency rooms as a result of scooter accidents. What you are about to read can help reduce the scooter/moped accident rate and, hopefully prevent you from becoming a sad statistic. You may think you’re going to live forever, but if you do dumb things on your scooter you can get killed.
Speed Kills:If you were to plot a curve of scooter speed versus scooter injuries/deaths you would find as the driver goes faster the more injuries and deaths occur. The reason for this is simple. It’s called reaction time. The time you have to react to a potentially dangerous scooter situation goes down as speed increases. If you’re going too fast there may be nothing you can do to prevent an accident. So, slow down! Your goal should be to get wherever you’re going, alive.
See and Be Seen: Nothing can be more important to your scooter driving well being that realizing that other drivers may not see you because of your size and position in relation to them. So, you must drive more defensively when on a scooter or moped. Here are some simple rules to follow:
1. Scooters shouldn’t tail gate. The other vehicle probably can’t see you anyway.
2. Don’t drive in an other drivers obvious blind spot. Remember the blind spot is larger for small vehicles.
3. Scooters should give trucks of all sizes a wide birth. Even though you may think they see you, they probably don’t.
4. Scooters should never pass another vehicle (on either side) at or near an intersection.
Study Safety: We have shown you two basics for scooter safety and given you a link for more information to study. This is only a start. We hope you now realize scooter safety is important and will study it.
