A Guide to Driving in Florida
Situated in the south-eastern area of the United States is the state of Florida, the country’s most southern state. The peninsula’s tropical climate is borrowed from the fact that it is flanked by the Gulf of Mexico to the west and the Atlantic Ocean to the east. This results in an all year round mean-temperature of at least 18°C, which is much to the delight of sun seekers. On the other hand the region is particularly susceptible to rapid tropical downpours and it has a six month hurricane season.
Despite its unpredictable climate Florida has been the world’s number one travel destination for the past few years, with 76.8m tourists passing through in 2004 alone. The state’s appeal is not hard to understand, with nearly 1000 miles worth of coastal beaches, world-renowned theme parks and being home to NASA’s headquarters.Considering the state is near the size of a medium-sized country it’s not at all impractical to get around by car. In fact driving from Pensacola, Florida’s westernmost city all the way down to Miami can be easily done in a day.
The wealth of diversity you would encounter on such a journey is incredible. As mentioned, one of the states biggest assets is its beaches, and whether you opt for the tranquil western Gulf Coast or the bustling social-life of the Gold Coast to the east, the pristine sands and crystal waters of both are sure to please.Much of Florida’s inland must-see attractions are found in central Florida, and include Walt Disney World, Universal Studios and SeaWorld to name but a few. If busy theme parks aren’t your thing then do not fear, as Florida’s countryside has much more to offer. There are for instance numerous natural springs, which provide excellent spots to cool off in the hot summer months.
